     Getting to Stonehenge

 
 
 

 

Travel to Stonehenge particularly from London is probably best met by booking a tour company. Stonehenge tours

Rail

The nearest train station to Stonehenge is Salisbury about 9.5 miles away. From London the trains depart from Waterloo Station to Salisbury. Check for times and prices as these may be subject to change and the trains depart approximately every hour. The journey takes about an hour and a half. Local buses or a cab can take you on from there.

Waterloo Station has trains running at 1 hour intervals to the nearest train station, Salisbury. The distance to Stonehenge in about 10 miles and is served by local bus routes and Taxi cab services. The journey time is approximately 90 minutes and is a pleasant scenic view of the English countryside as you head away from London. It is worth noting that cheaper day fares are valid after 9.30 avoiding the rush hour.

An alternative would be from Paddington station to Bath Spa this takes an hour and a half, the station is 10 minutes from the center of Bath. There are a number of transport links to Stonehenge from here with local tour companies providing Stonehenge tours. Cheaper fares are valid after 9.30 and the route is scenic particularly in early summer with towns giving way to the green trees and fields.

From London we would recommend a combined day tour that will incorporate Bath and the Roman Baths

Bus

Victoria station has a regular service to the area by bus as well as a main central pick up location for the Stonehenge combined day tours. The closest stop off point is at Amesbury this about 2 miles from Stonehenge and a pleasant walk. Local busses and Taxi cabs are on hand to take you directly to Stonehenge.
